Finally

Sorry for the radio silence of the past week or so, I'm getting over a concussion so my school work and health have been my main focuses. But I'm almost 100% better! Thank goodness! I've not been allowed to work out or participate in rugby practice all week.

Because of my concussion I did absolutely nothing interesting this weekend. My room is almost done, all that needs to happen is the hanging of some pictures and a bulletin board. You'll see it soon, I promise! I want it to be seen particularly bad. 

The main thing that I did do was read The Grapes Of Wrath for my English class and FINALLY I saw Moonrise Kingdom!

Oh my goodness! So good! I'm so excited for the Oscars now.

Basically it's one of the greatest movies ever. For sure in my top 20.

The premise is two kids in the 1960's run away together and the chaos that ensues with their disappearance. Pretty much it's the cutest thing ever. 

P.S. I'm going to do an Oscar prediction closer to the actual date, when I've seen more of the movies too. Get excited about that.

New Meca

It's finally here! I've been waiting for months. 

The new Madewell is here in The Woods! 

It only opened today, but of course, I had to go.

Allow me a second to be really excited.

It's wonderful. Like really great.

The store is nice and bright (painful for me), well organized, and clean. 

I loved the displays, not to busy and bold, but understated and classy.

My favorite part? The scarf bar. I loved the organization of the hangers. Not to mention the scarves themselves. They seem really well made, like they'll stand the test of time. I can't wait for Friday's payday so I can maybe snag one, or at least start a fund to get there. Sad side note: they're not cheep. 

I wish they had all the scarves online, the selection in store is so much better!

I also loved the general aesthetic of the store, the denim, leather, chiffon, and cotton all went together surprisingly well. The leather totes right next to the super cute patterned socks looked so cute! Also the shoe area was super cute! The leather flats are totally adorable.

One thing that I really did not like was that they seemed to have the same things in different places all over the store. It just threw me off a little. I was expecting to see something different but then *surprise* it's the same thing. At least the repeated things were cute.

One of my personal favorites was the black and white wool/cotton blend dress. the vertical stripes help elongate your body and give the illusion of height and it covers the "tummy trouble" spot that a lot of people have. It was super figure flattering when I had it on. It was a little heavier owing to the wool, but it really doesn't look that way. Also, the skirt is super bouncy and the sleeves are short so i wouldn't really be worried about overheating.
 

I ended up walking away doing less than $20 in damage. I got a super cute pair of earrings for my seconds on both sides. I always have doubles in but I've been struggling to find something in a cute gold/brass. The bows are in the right hue and have rhinestones, a good tie in to my left cartilage piercing, I usually have a shiny thing in it.

Also with my purchase I got a free Madewell Texas tote. It's a basic canvas tote with longer straps and navy blue screen printing. I'm sure that I'll have a use for it, I'm just not sure what yet. 

I'm really excited about the Madewell and I can't wait to see what they have in store for the Market Street location!

Funny story about the shirt: it was my mother's in the 80's. And it's a boy's.

If the shoe fits, eh? Thank goodness for button-ups. Seriously, they are my favorite kind of shirt. So easy to throw on and be comfortable but still look classy and professional.

My Michael Kors watch is the one I got for Christmas and I'm seriously LOVING it. I feel so sophisticated checking the time on my wrist, not my phone. Not to mention pulling your phone out in class is just not great looking anyway.

Slightly Perfect

It's been incredibly cold (for Texas) these past few weeks and as much as I love the cold, coupled with some very nasty torrential downpours, I'm craving summer. This practically cause for institutionalization for me. I despise hot temperatures. Over 85 and I feel like I'm melting. But my favorite part of the warmer months is Snapple Peach Tea. It's a little bit of heaven. 

I haven't had any since Octoberish and I'm really missing it right now. Ugh. I can't wait for March. I've been able to survive with my Williams Sonoma Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate but sometimes you just want something a little different. 

Enter the spritzer. 

This cheery little drink can drive away the winter blues in a heartbeat and brings joy to the hearts of many. It's like the easiest thing too!

Here's what you'll need for a most excelent spritzer:

1 cup

Some ice

cranberry juice or a juice blend with cranberry (I always use Cran-Grape)

Sprite

Fill your cup about half full with ice

add the juice

add the sprite

The ratios of juice to soda are 100% up to the maker, less juice, more bubbly, whatever you want!

I usually go for 2/3 juice and 1/3 soda.

Add a bendy straw and enjoy sipping on summertime!

Wiffleball and Sushi

Allow me to begin with this statement, I began Saturday with no plans.

No plans quickly turned into a full day that was a lot of fun.

I started off waking up around 10. I hauled my carcass out of bed and made breakfast, eggs and an English muffin. Yum! While eating I cleared out one of my Vampire Diaries from the DVR. I'm so behind right now. It's really unfortunate. Then I got ready for a TWHS Wiffleball game. That was actually a lot of fun. Only five of us showed up at the park, so after about half an hour we aborted the game plans and headed to Sonic, a Wiffleball tradition. 

After Sonic. I went home planning on a nap. What I ended up with wasn't exactly as boring as that. I came home to find my father washing the chick magnet (his Prius) and decided that Elmer (my Avalon) needed a bath too. So I washed Elmer and then took a shower myself. 

After that things got fun! My lovely father and I watched the Speed channel auction off classic cars until we were both hungry. Then we decided on the local Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi place for dinner.

Oh how I adore sushi and we really had some of the best Sushi ever. And the night was really fun. I got to hang out with my dad, something that I really like doing and haven't been able to do in a while.

Oklahoma

Happy Friday everyone!

I'm so excited that the week is over AND we have a three day weekend! Just what the doctor ordered!

Gwen has been so busy with choir that we haven't hung out in what feels like forever. But she has a free night so we're having a girls night and meeting some other friends at the show.

We're starting with dinner and then heading to the school theater department's performance of Oklahoma. Honestly Oklahoma is my least favorite musical ever written, but I have to go see it for a number of reasons. My tech theater class requires you to see every show, one of my really good friends is staring as Laurie, another of my friends is the Stage Manager, and to top it all off, my mother is in it. Yes, my mother. 

In an effort to drum up publicity, the department selected the popular teachers to be in the show so the students would want to see them. Oh jeez. I'm not sure how to feel about it... 

Also, I'm super excited to show y'all my room!!! It should be ready in a few weeks, I still need things like curtains, but the sham and duvet came in and I am just SO PUMPED!!! Hope y'all are too.

(Rue) La La!

I, as most other students, love a good bargain.

And on something I would buy anyway? It's a cause for celebration. 

So naturally I love Rue La La. 

What is Rue La La you ask? Good question...

Rue La La is an invitational members only website that offers boutiques that last for three days.

These boutiques can be anything. From ski gear to stilettos, you wait long enough and Rue will have it. Mostly you have Rue organized by brand and when you accept an invitation you receive emails letting you know what brands and boutiques are upcoming. 

Some of my friends and I have had major success on Rue. Over the summer one of my friends from Project Jump Start and I had gone shopping and she had tried on this GORGEOUS French Connection dress. Lamenting at the price we walked away and continued, but neither of us forgot that dress. A week later I was on the Rue "essential dresses" boutique and there was the navy French Connection dress! Quickly Annalisa and I were on the phone and after 10 minutes there was a credit to my account for $10. Because when one of the people that you invited to join Rue makes their first purchase, you get a $10 account credit. Awesome, yes?

When Lilly Pulitzer by Rue La La is in my inbox, there is a party thrown, even if it's only in my head. Last week's Lilly announcement came at a bad time, I had just gone shopping with my sister and I had eaten out plenty on my own dime over the winter break. So I set a budget. I allowed myself $30 to spend and then took to the computer. While I'm really looking for some Lilly shorts, the options are sometimes limited on discount websites, and unfortunately the sorts I wanted weren't there. Darn. So I moused on over to the paper section Imagine, a section of the Lilly boutique exclusively for paper and stationary. I decided on a bundle of the "Scarlet Begonia' items. It included: a magnetic note pad, a regular note pad, a large sticky pad, a lilly stuck on you set, a medium sized journal, and a 30 page photo album.

I was so glad to have gotten that previous $10 credit, otherwise I would have broken my budget.

So, you say you want to join Rue? 

Let's just say that you're welcome.

Classy Storage

Things that smell good are possibly some of my favorite things... 

Perfume is the best. And I my love for perfume is translated into its storage, well it will be.

I'm currently looking for a mirrored tray to properly display my lovelies.

Pottery Barn Speakeasy Tray- I'd totally get it with my initial, not sure how much I like the railing, it might get in the way a tad...

Touch Of Class- It's so eleagant! LOVE! The little feet are so cute!

Etsy Rod Tray- It's so cute and simple... I don't like how it's chipped, but that could easily be covered. I'm just not sure that I would like to pay over $40 for something that is imperfect.

There is another option... I could just make my own with a mirror, a wooden frame and some paint to match my new room design... 

 Speaking of... I'm so excited to show you all what it's going to look like! I can't wait for everything to be done! This might be a while, but the bedding is on its way! But I won't show it until it's all done. And I mean ALL done. Unless of course I cave and just show it in bits...

Thank Goodness

I'm a sufferer of frequent and severe migraines.

And I am so incredibly thankful to live in a time when my crippling headaches can easily be treated. 

Imagine living in a world where you had a condition, one that would eventually kill you.

There were treatments being developed to prolong your life, but the federal government dragged its feet. While they tested and delayed getting medicine out to the public, you watched your friends, colleagues, and family members die. There was nothing to be done.

That's the premise behind the Oscar nominated documentary How To Survive A Plague.

How To Survive A Plague uses archival footage, current interviews and first person accounts to paint the picture of the AIDS epidemic in the 1980's and 1990's in New York City. The documentary focuses on two AIDS activists groups, ACT UP (AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power) and TAG (Treatment Action Group). Both are run by AIDS patients and their allies. 

How To Survive A Plague was one of the most moving documentaries that I have ever seen. Seeing so many young people on screen and knowing that they didn't live to see 40 in most cases was extremely sobering. How To Survive A Plague teaches us that sometimes in order to get what we need, we have to break the rules. While sometimes the activists took things a little to far, I agree with them for the most part. It was largely due to the ACT UP and TAG activists that treatments like AZT were provided to AIDS sufferers in a much more timely manner. 

I hope that if my generation ever experiences something as terrible as AIDS I will have the courage and moral strength to act as the ACT UP and TAG members did. Only time will tell.

Thank You Notes

It's right after the holiday season, so there is no better time to refresh on writing a simple thank you card!

The main point is sincerity, closely followed by gratitude.

Focus on what you can do/use the gift for. When and where would it be appropriate to use it? Perhaps you could include an idea of what is going to happen to it, everyone likes to feel like their gift was the right thing, even if it wasn't. 

Say something nice about the person who gave you the gift, EX: "I can't wait to see you in June for graduation". 

Overall keep it simple. Nothing stinks like a letter that drags on longer than it should. No one said you were writing a novel. Just a few sentences will do fine.

Then sign off in the proper way according to your relation to the person. Sincerely, love etc.

New And Noteworthy

The new patterns are really cute this season! The lobsters and the denim stripes are my favorites for sure!

The Oversized Tablet Clutch looks absolutely adorable! I'm loving the new shape for a tablet case. I'm looking for a case for my new iPad and this is at the top of the pack. I'd totally go for the denim stripes. One of my favorite parts, the leather is vegan friendly!

The new phone cases are really nice too. The fact that you can choose to get it for an iPhone 4/4s or a 5 is really handy too! I'd totally go for the lobsters, but that's probably just my Boston side coming out...

Another of my favorites are the new weekender bags. They look great, super big too. That would be wonderful for me, a clinical over-packer. The anchors are totally calling my name here!

Basically I'm really pleased with the new line. I've watched Sloane Ranger grow for the last year or so, and the new direction is great!

Green

I feel like green is going to be my color this year.

I'm really quite excited about it.

I've always worn blue so much that other things got shunted to the side. But new things are growing on me this year. This first Classy Tuesday of the year was a direct reflection of this new time.

It's The End.

 It's the end. I've finished it. And there's never going to be any more. 

Gossip Girl that is.

Guys, I finished it. It's taken me 3 months and a few hundred hours but it's all done! 

I don't know how to feel. I'm really happy to have finished it and be caught up and all, but on the other side, I'm excited that It's done. I'm slightly upset. I feel really connected to the characters and I'm sad that I don't get to see any more of them. Secretly all of us want to be as, shall we say, liberated as Serena or as carefree as Chuck. 

The secret reveal of who Gossip Girl was, was a TOTAL surprise to me.

Not to mention it was totally implausible.

Ugh, I went back and re-watched a few of the earlier episodes and I think that I totally busted the plausability of the real person. They were with other people when blasts came out with no time for them to create the blasts. 

Basically, I'm annoyed. But I'm glad that the series is over. The plot lines were getting stale and I needed a complete overhaul or to be stopped. 

The epilogue was wonderful. I cried a little. Okay, I cried a lot. I was just happy to see that everyone was finally happy after so much heartache and they had all gotten what they wanted. 

Yes, I'm that much of a sap bag.

Swap

One of the blogs I enjoy is the Sweet Tea Paperie blog. It's run by this fantastic girl named Amanda, she also has a really cute Etsy store! It's all notebooks, cutting boards, and iphone cases.

Anywhoo, Amanda writes letters. Lots of them. In fact she has a 365 project where she writes a letter to someone every day. It's really cool! 

But Amanda has also organized a Snail Mail Swap. Basically you submit your name, and address into a pool by January 18th. After that Amanda will match you up with a partner and by January 21st you know your partner. Then you just create a message in a bottle! Fill a 13 ounce or less bottle with all sorts of fun things and a note and pop it into the mail by February 4th.

Comical Accidents

You know that classic cartoon where the character splits his/her pants and then everyone in the area bursts out laughing and giggling and pointing. Well, I seem to have experienced something like that yesterday.

While I was at work I split my pants. My friend Loryn and I were dancing around to Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know" and when the song said "but you didn't have to stoop so low" I stooped low. Unfortunately, my pants weren't prepared to stoop low. Then disaster. After reaching the bottom of my trajectory I felt something. A ripping something. 

MY PANTS RIPPED!

My Delia's Morgan jeans that I've had for YEARS split in the back, right down the seam. Fortunately, I had my Land's End 3/4 Zip Pullover that could be quickly tied around my waist (so very early 2000's I know) and my mother was only a quick phone call away. A new pair of pants was quickly procured. 

However it was more the principle of the thing. I split my pants. After I got over it and I had new pants on everything was okay again. I was able to laugh about it later. I still need new pants though...

Expermenting...

I truly adore nail polish. The pop of color it offers is really fun.

I also love changing the presentation of color too.

I've been dying to try something new, and that new thing would be matte.

While I would of course say that Essie's "Matte About You" is really all that, I can't. 

I went the cheep route and bought the drug store brand. I just wanted to be sure that I liked the look of it first. And I do. I really do. The dry time for nails is quite reduced, ALWAYS a plus. This is all very exciting. 

While I can't attest to the staying power of the Revlon, I only put it on this afternoon, it does look good.

A cautionary word about matte, it always looks dry. It's almost maddening. I despise this. I gave it less dry time than the usual thinkng, no shine, less time. But I was wrong. After attempting to open a few things using normal lack of caution I observed the damage that had been done. Another touch up of color and matte they looked like nothing had happened. Another thing about matte, it amplifies EVERY flaw. Be careful that you like the way the color looks before adding a top coat.

Ulta is going to be my next stop for Essie, most likely tomorrow.

Down Right, Up Left.

Over the break I've developed a new hobby... The Kumihimo Disk!

I received it as a Christmas gift from my grandfather and step-grandmother and I've been having a ball with it since it was unwrapped!

The whole premise is it is a foam disc with notches on the sides to move cord around. The cord creates a cool hollow knotted braid. Like this... 

I had so much fun making my bracelets I thought I might show you how to make one yourself!

It's incredibly easy and pretty darn mindless and relaxing, perfect to do in front of an episode of Gossip Girl or a documentary.  

Here's what you're going to need:

Cord

Scissors

twine

Glue

Kumihimo Ends

Kumihimo Disc or a homemade substitute (each disc should have 32 notches)

Here's what you do:

Begin with 8 strands of cord or string. My strings were 18 inches long. 

Tie the ends of all the strings together, feed the ends through the hole in the center of the disc.

Set the disc up like this:

Place two strings at 90 degrees, at 

1 and 32

8 and 9

16 and 17

24 and 25

Then begin, hold the hoop with 1 facing away from you.

Move the string from 1 to the bottom, spot 15.

 Then move the string in place 17 up to place 31.

 Then give the disc a 90 degree turn to the right so 24 and 25 are facing away from you. 

Move the right string (25) down to spot 7 and the bottom left string (9) to the top spot (23).

Give it another 90 degree turn and repeat, moving the top right down to the closest right position and the bottom left up to the closest left position.

Keep on going until your bracelet is as long as you want. 

When you're done take the cord off and put a knot at the end.

Then use your twine to tie off the the end of the cord below the knot on the braided end. 

Once the cord is secured cut the knot off and use jewelry glue and coat the end. slip the Kumihimo end over the end of the gluey cord and leave it for 24 hours to ensure maximum staying. Then assemble your ends with the jump rings. 

Wear your new bracelet with pride.

p.s. use this guide to make new patterns... it keeps things interesting.

Soaking In My Lazieness.

Yesterday I indulged in a lovely day. 

One of my best friends Gwen and I headed downtown for lunch and shopping!

We started our day at 10, she met me at my house for some gossip dishing.

Then we headed to the library to pick up a book for my mother.

And then our adventure began...

We hopped on I-45 and headed downtown to one of my favorite restaurants, Beaver's!

Beaver's is a super cool place in the Houston Heights, on the outskirts of Houston.

I love the funky, Austin type flair that the interior exhibits. 

The wall is mirrored and the food is wonderful. My favorite is the Nut Burger. Its made of brown rice and cashews with some red onions, homemade pickles, and a gluten free bun, it's wonderful!

The desserts are great too!

Beaver Balls are possibly among the best ball shaped food ever. It's a series of deep fried brownies (in ball shape) and small ice cream balls. YUM! 

After lunch we headed to one of my favorite shopping sites, Nordstrom Rack! 

We shopped till we dropped and then headed back to the suburbs. 

After that we went back to my house and enjoyed Ellen and What Not To Wear. 

Ellen is always hysterical and Stacy and Clinton are absolutely hysterical. I've loved What Not To Wear for years and Stacy and Clinton have never ever disappointed.

So here's to the lazy days.

Celebration

As almost everyone knows, I'm big into "celebrating the little things", but, what qualifies as a "little thing"? Everything. From a sky full of stars to a chance rendezvous with a friend. And something like that happened to me last night.

I have a really nasty habit of incessantly tweeting on my personal account, and I'll tweet almost anything funny. So, naturally, while I was watching Gossip Girl on Netflix, a few quotes got tweeted. But then a really great "little thing" happened. A girlfriend of mine tweeted me back and told me that she was on the same part! It ended up us texting for about an hour about the episode I was watching, she had already seen earlier in the day.

Both of us are Gossip Girl newbies, we got in too late to watch the final season with everyone else. It was really nice to have someone to talk to who has the same first time feelings, shock at Serena for being Serena, horror at Chuck's latest scheme, etc. 

So thank you Morgan! You made my night and Gossip Girl even better.

Don't forget to celebrate the little things, no matter how small.

1.     nutcracker/bear- It was a few days to Christmas when I took this picture, these were my desk decorations. When I danced I got a nutcracker after each performance of The Nutcracker. This was from my last year of dancing, 7^th grade.

2.     blue box- My older sister decorated the box years ago. Now I keep my smaller and most immediate DIY craft supplies in it so I can always have them in my reach whenever I’m feeling creative.

3.     Sharpie cup- Really it’s an old peanut butter jar that is covered in Duck Tape. It changes all the time. I adore Sharpies and use them for all sorts of things, especially writing notes to myself.

4.     water glass- I drink water practically 24/7, water is always on my desk or in my hand

5.     e.o.s.- My favorite form of lip balm. I adore things that smell good, and e.o.s. is the best of both lip balm and scent/taste. I have mint, summer melon, strawberry sorbet, and lemon (my favorite).

6.     family photo- I adore keeping mementos of my childhood all around, I think that it helps keep me young. This picture is from when my family went to Sea World when I was five. Side Note: I LOVE Sea World

7.     Lilly pad/stickies- I adore my Lilly paper goods! I can get almost anything I want in my favorite May Flowers!

8.     MacBook Pro- What I do the majority of my blogging on. I also keep my pictures on it and my iTunes.

9.     Kate Spade Laptop case- Beauty! One of the first things I bought for my laptop to keep it protected and stylish. Polka Dots are one of my favorite things too!

10. Mirror- A 15^th birthday present from a friend. I always feel like a princess when I’m looking into it.

11. Makeup Brushes- A cute way of storing my makeup brushes. A small square vase (from my sister’s graduation party) filled with white rice. I love the marriage of the cute and functional that it maintains.

12. OPI Nail Polish- Also one of my favorite things. The color in question is part of the Spanish collection, Manicurist Of Seville. It’s a great burgundy/pink for winter and holiday festivities.

13. Sherri DuPree Bemis Print- A Christmas gift from my sister last year. Sherri is the lead singer of a band called Eisley and married to the lead singer of a different band called Say Anything. Sherri is also an artist, her work is quirky and gothic inspired with a dash of comic book art. You can look at and buy her work on www.sherisink.com

14. Lilly Agenda- My everyday agenda with everything I need to keep my life running smoothly and on track. It even has my monogram on the back! Without it I’m completely lost, I forgot it at home one day and almost had a panic attack in class. Basically my entire life is set by it.

15. Blue Sky Agenda- I plan all my blog posts and keep a schedule for everything Classy Tuesdays in it!

16. Starbucks pick of the week- I love free music and I’m at starbucks at least twice a month for various study groups. I can never resist grabbing one!
