It's right after the holiday season, so there is no better time to refresh on writing a simple thank you card!
The main point is sincerity, closely followed by gratitude.
Focus on what you can do/use the gift for. When and where would it be appropriate to use it? Perhaps you could include an idea of what is going to happen to it, everyone likes to feel like their gift was the right thing, even if it wasn't.
Say something nice about the person who gave you the gift, EX: "I can't wait to see you in June for graduation".
Overall keep it simple. Nothing stinks like a letter that drags on longer than it should. No one said you were writing a novel. Just a few sentences will do fine.
Then sign off in the proper way according to your relation to the person. Sincerely, love etc.
