One Big Birthday!

Today is one of the biggest birthdays celebrated in my family, one everyone should celebrate...
The birthday of one Mr. Harry James Potter!

As avid (or rabid) "Potter Heads" we felt it necessary to prepare a Potter themed feast for our dinner.

Our menu?
Shepard's Pie
Brussels Sprouts and Bechamel Sauce
and
Custard (Canary) Creams

Sounds great right? Oh, and all the recipes are all from Claire's copy of The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook.
Flattening the cookies with a sugar coated cup before the oven.

Cooling cookies!
Finished Custard Creams! YUM!

We are all so excited to have dinner tonight, we are even dressing up as Potter characters. Claire as Luna Lovegood, Mother as Professor Minerva McGonagall, and myself as Ginny Weasly.

Making Canary Creams! The party in the common room is one of my favorite parts of The Goblet Of Fire. I'll give you a little refresher...

"Want a jam tart, Hermionie?" said Fred.
Hermionie looked doubtfully at the plate he was offering her. Fred grinned.
"It's alright," he said. "I haven't done anything to them. It's the custard creams you've got to watch -"
Neville, who had just bitten into a custard cream, choked and spat it out. Fred laughed.
"Just my little joke, Neville"
...
Just then Neville caused a slight distraction by turning into a large canary.
"Oh - sorry, Neville!" Fred shouted over all the laughter. "I forgot - it was the custard creams we hexed -"
Within a minute, however, Neville had molted, and once his feathers had fallen off, he reappeared looking entirely normal. He even joined in laughting.
"Canary Creams!" Fred shouted to the excitable crowd. "George and I invented them - seven Sickles each, a bargain!"

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire by J. K. Rowling (366-367)

Classic Rowling... also, FUN FACT! J. K. Rowling gave Harry the same birthday as her, so Happy Birthday Joan Rowling too!

Keep it classy and magical,

Go For The Gold! (everyone can)

Olympic fever, I think almost everyone has it. Team USA athletes have become the spokes-people of choice for almost everyone, from Kellogs to Subway for the next 17 days everyone is a fan.

Everyone wants their favorite to win the coveted gold medal.

And to cheer on our favorite competitors, and celebrate with them, here is a list of my favorite gold medal worthy gold accessories from the bottom up!

On Your Feet:

Jack Rogers Hamptons Navajo in Gold. Classic Jacks, I simply adore these shiny take off on the traditional Jacks. While I still don't have any Jacks in my closet, they are on the short list of things to buy with my first paycheck.

Steve Madden's Ilussion in Black Gold. The pumps combine several of my favorite things, heals, toe caps, and anything Steve Madden. Yes, they are technically "stilettos" however, at 4 and 1/2 inches, they are not in any way "find me a pole" shoes. They keep it classy and stylin' with a little bit of edge.

Around Your Waist:

I stumbled across this gem almost a year ago while browsing Spotted Moth and making my Christmas List. My favorite part of it is the fact that the glitter is individual, not just a belt that is glittered.

On Your Nails:

Polish that is! OPI's Glitzerland is a great gold color! It's not quite as yellowish as some golds, but for a pale girl that's a benefit, otherwise I end up looking sickly. Personally, I wear it for rugby tournaments as a little hint of sparkle and a point to my opponents, watch out, we're taking home first.

In Your Hands

Kate Spade's Ruby Street Bow Monette is for those fancier occasions. A cute little clutch that speaks for its self, it will have you drooling. Perfect for those little black dresses and summer wedges.

On Your Wrist:

One of my favorites in gold from Tiffany and Co., the Tiffany Notes Bangle is stunning. The touch of flair from the writing on the bangle is just what a plain gold bangle needs. The size is wonderful, not to chunky and not to skinny for an owner to worry about the bangle snapping.

On Your Eyes:

My ever-loved Urban Decay makes a great liquid eyeliner, and for some fun gold and sparkle look no further than Urban Decay's 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner. Words can not describe how much I love this eyeliner. It's the first liquid eyeliner that I can actually put on properly, and the formula dries quickly so you won't have any unsightly smudges on the top of your lid. Run, don't walk to the store and get yourself one, or all of them. It doesn't matter. I wear "Smog" as part of my daily make up.

Keep it classy and be a good and gracious sport,

Favorite Color... For Now

My name is Eleanor and I am a nail polish Junkie.

I know it and I've come to love it. In fact, I've even gotten a lot better at doing my nails by myself. Summer is a great opportunity to put whatever color polish you want on and to flaunt it.

I love the summer brights. And my search for the perfect summer coral is at an end!
OPI's Tasmanian Devil Made Me Do It is exactly what I want in a coral. Perfectly orange balanced with a hint of red.

I love coral!  What colors are you loving this summer?

Stacks

I mentioned yesterday that I have a usual "stack" of bracelets and realized that some of you might not quite understand what a stack really is.

Stack- adjective- a set of bracelets that are worn on the wrist, go together well, and enhance an outfit.

Let me give you a few examples...

This is my most common stack.
The bangle was a Christmas gift a few years ago from My dad's dad and step mom (Lenny and Donna). I also got the circle one (below) with it. It's angular and interesting.
The beads are from a medieval French town called Les Baux, I got them on my trip.
The cuff is from one of my dad's old girlfriends. She got it for me while on holiday in Honduras.

 This is also pretty common.
The clay beads are all different colors and have all sorts of different flowers. It keeps me happy. This was the one thing I got from Barcelona, Spain. I couldn't pass it up, only 1 euro!
The green beads again.
And the square bangle again.

I wear this a lot too.
Green beads (can you tell that I ADORE them?)
The bracelet is also from Lenny and Donna, it's Brighton and I got it probably two years ago for Christmas. It says "Believe in Yourself". It's a nice reminder to keep dreaming. Big Sister has one that says "Follow Your Heart".

I don't wear this one that often, but it is still in the rotation.
Clay beads from Barcelona again.
The circle complement to the square bangle.
Sparkly beads from Sam Moon.

Jazz It Up!

One of my favorite things as a kid was art class. I knew, even as a kid I was terrible at drawing. But I still enjoyed it. In free draw time my friends and I would be "Fashion Designers". As a "Fashion Designer" my friends and I would make over what we saw as "bad outfits".

My first day at work caused memories of these innocent times to resurface. But only because of the uniforms. Really, there not bad. I know people with worse. I just don't like red. That and a t-shirt, jeans, and a  baseball cap aren't really the ideal wardrobe of a self proclaimed prepster.

So I asked myself... What would my 4th grade self think of this? I know exactly what. I would insist on changing things.

For starters, a girl is never without her pearls. So a strand of pearls is a must.
The employee handbook only says that hair must be "tied back" so instead of a pony tail, I opted for a side braid.
Bracelets are allowed, but they can't dangle. So I went for a a cuff, bangle, and small beaded bracelet. My usual "stack".

Shoes are another story all together.
According to the handbook, shoes must be closed toe and cover the foot. Basically, sneakers or Sperry's. To keep things interesting and make Stacy and Clinton of What Not To Wear proud, my shoes completed the CPTS (Color Pattern Texture Shine) with a pattern. I opted for my Ralph Lauren pink plaid top sider style shoes.

And thus, my work uniform was complete! I was still in dress code, but I felt at least semi-classy.

Remember everybody, just because you have a dress code there are still ways to express your own personal style. Just don't go overboard with personal expression. Getting fired or expelled due to fashion choices is embarrassing!

Keep it classy and indivdual,
~E

Changes

Everyone goes through changes in their life. Big or small, the world is an ever evolving place.
Static characters that we learn about in English class are fiction, an impossible person.
As we grow things change. We ask for more responsibility, sometimes it  is given and sometimes not.

Today I'm proud to say that I have taken on more responsibility.
I got a job!
You're humble blogger is one of the newest team members at Red Mango Frozen Yogurt!
I don't know if I'm ready for what is going to happen on Wednesday when I start for real, but I'm sure everything will turn out. All I know is that I am a bundle of nerves and excitement.

The work uniform!
Keep it classy

Jump Start 2012

Here it is… the post you’ve been waiting for…  A SUMMARY OF MY TREK ACROSS THE EUROPEAN CONTINENT!

We began with a 10 hour plane ride on Lufthansa airlines to Frankfurt, Germany. A 10 hour plane ride in coach is not exactly an ideal situation, however it was eased by the best airplane food I’ve ever had. Lufthansa served us a wonderful snack mix titled “happy mix” that was quite tasty. Also, dinner was delectable. As a vegetarian I was served spinach pasta filled with ricotta cheese and a brownie. Both were most excellent.

We then hopped off the flight into Germany and onto the flight to Rome. After a 2 hour flight into Rome, passed quickly with many hands of go fish between Annalisa and I, we got onto a 4 hour bus ride bound for Florence.

Florence passed swiftly, in a flash of early mornings and games of “Never Have I Ever” with my room mates, Annalisa, Hallie, and Miranda in which I lost for the first time. I would like to say in my defense, I was targeted (never have I ever been a red head was a direct threat from the blonde and two brunettes). I am not, nor have I ever been a wild child. Florence is also home to one of my favorite shopping areas in the world, the leather markets. As a vegetarian you would think that I'm morally against it, but for some odd reason a coat does not turn me off as much as a steak. I am happy to report that I came home state side with a teal(ish) leather coat for myself and nice belts for both parents (cheetah print and plain black, guess who got which).

We then transitioned to Nice, France. A bustling city on the Mediterranean Sea right next to Monaco. The hotel we stayed at was by far the coolest place we stayed. It was a converted late 1800’s mansion, complete with refurbished elevator and a lovely common room. The wifi only worked in the common room so it was actually a great bonding experience. We enjoyed a splendid day in the pebble beaches of Nice and I proceeded to bond with the kids who turned out to be my best friends on the trip. Nice was a great central location! We took a really cool day trip to Grasse , a town about an hour away that’s famous for perfume. We even went to a perfume factory and made our own perfume. It sort of smells like fruit loops and oranges had a love child. I’m giving it to my friend Amanda as a joke. (She hates all my perfume, more on this at some point in the future.)  But we all had a ball making it! One of the girls there practically succeeded in creating the exact scent of fruit loops. It’s quite impressive.

Sunflower fields on the bus ride to Avignon
After Nice, we  headed inland to Avignon, France.  Avignon is a quieter town off the beaten path for most tourists. But it does have a great carousel. (Side note: I was the only one in my group who wanted to ride the carousel, so I rode alone. While dismounting the horse I hit my leg which resulted in a massive bruise that I still have.) Anywhoo, Avignon was wonderful and a nice break from the hustle and bustle of the two big cities we had already stayed in. There was plenty to do, at a cafe one night during free time the "family" met a french girl named Pauline. Basically we talked for hours and we're facebook friends now. It was such a cool cultural experience to get to know a French teenager not made up in my text book. She is 16, but has grown up so much faster than anyone I know in The United States. I'm almost jealous of the freedom the culture seems to allow. Then again everything happens for the French at 18, driver's licence, drinking, and voting. It seems so much more logical.

This is the Pont Du Gard, an old Roman aqueduct still standing in France.
After Avignon we took the 8 hour bus ride along the coast to Barcelona, Spain. Barcelona was by far my favorite. It was a fast paced city with an active night life and glistening, clear, yellow sand beach. While still riding the high from the 1994 Summer Olympics, tourism has never been better in Barcelona. All the history in Barcelona is palpable. Gaudi's masterpieces and the massive fresh food and flower market. Everything in Barcelona feels so alive, so young. Basically, I can't wait to go back someday. One of my favorite parts of the entire trip happened in Barcelona, that would be the day trip to a small town about an hour and a half from the city itself to the Salvador Dali Museum. He is by far my favorite impressionist. The picture of Gala (his wife) looking naked out the window that turns into Abraham Lincoln from far away is just indescribably cool. My favorite part of Barcelona was a bike tour we took through the entire city. Experiencing the city from a locals perspective and getting to see the WHOLE city was unlike anything that I could have seen on foot. If you ever go to Europe and plan on staying centrally located, attempt to locate some bikes for your group. Becoming part of the city and the culture is an experience worth having.

From Barcelona we took a 2 hour train trip inland to Madrid. Madrid was... well... less than Barcelona. It was hot and busy and there was not a lot to do but shop, and as much as I love shopping, I had already splurged on a leather coat (eek!) in Florence, so shopping was out of the question. Also, at this point we had been away from home for awhile, so crabbiness was to be expected. However, The Prado Museum was truly spectacular. One of the highlights of Barcelona for me.

Leaving our mark on Madrid.

Fountain in the gardens of Barcelona.

The last night was truly one of the best we had. The wake up call was scheduled for 2:30 in the morning, so the vast majority of the group decided to pull an all nighter, my first all nighter. We stayed up, aided by coke and Cookie Monster blue coconut Doughnuts. Everyone just kept their doors open and wandered around, hanging out with everyone. After that night it was particularly difficult to say my good byes. We had all become really close. After the trip, I feel like I have a brand new set of friends who know me on a whole new level, even better than my family in some ways.

The Family in Les Baux, France.
So remember kids, friends come in all shapes and sizes. Don't judge a book by it's cover and all that jazz. But seriously, I have a brand new group of friends that I see at least 3 times a week now and I couldn't imagine my life without them.

Keep it classy,
~E

Home at last!

Hey there! And a hearty hello from my warm and cozy bed! I'm so happy to say that I'm home safe in Texas! And while I had a ball in Europe making new friends, learning things about history, and plenty about my self I'm so happy to be home!

I have to babysit in a few minutes so this is just a quick post to say I'm home and I'm going to be putting up a LONG post today or tomorrow detailing my travels. Be on the lookout!

I can't wait to tell you guys all about it!!
